Kathie Lee Gifford sang about it; the television show, The Love Boat, made it seem glamorous; and now it is a multi-billion dollar industry. Cruising is more popular now than it has ever been.  By 2007, it is projected that the availability of cruise line jobs will triple, meaning 47,000 new jobs.  What is available in cruise line jobs?  You might be surprised to learn that there are several different types of jobs available on a cruise ship.

A Floating Five-Star Hotel

A cruise ship has to run like a well-oiled machine, literally and figuratively.  In order for this to occur there are two main categories of cruise line jobs.  There are jobs for people who are responsible for sailing and operating the ship.  This category includes deck and engine officers, seamen, and motormen.  The second category is the staff members who directly or indirectly service or/and entertain passengers. These are general categories with several departments under each.

Cruise Line Jobs on the Love Boat

If you want to work with Captain Stubing, you could work in the engine department or the deck department.  These areas are responsible for the safe, mechanical running of the ship and include the captains, engineers, motor men, sea men, and security personnel.

Maybe Julie’s job is more your style. In the entertainment department you might work as an event planner, featured entertainer or behind the scenes as a stage hand or assistant to the event planner.  Another area of entertainment is the casino, for which cruise lines have become very popular.  Any job you could get in a land-locked casino is available on a cruise ship.

Isaac had a great job serving drinks to all the happy cruisers, but his area of employment includes many other cruise line jobs.  Many cruise lines are famous for their food and drink and the jobs available in preparing and serving them are numerous.  Just imagine a floating restaurant and all the staff that would be needed to make it run smoothly. 

A little more specialized area of cruise line jobs is in the medical field, working with Doc.  While this may seem like a cake walk, keep in mind the recent incident where a large cruise ship lurched and sent guest tumbling all over the ship.  It is possibly even more challenging to be in this department on a ship because you have limited access to supplies.
